Workshop: Soil Evaluation & Amendment

Join us for a crash course in understanding soil, your garden’s lifeblood. We will discuss the basic components & characteristics of soil, and how to identify them in your garden. Bring a soil sample, and everyone will have the opportunity to evaluate your soil to discover its material & macronutrientcomposition (we will briefly discuss micronutrients, but in this class we will focus on and test for Nitrogen, Potassium and Phosphorus). We will then troubleshoot your results to determine the next steps towards improving your soil.
Please bring a soil sample of about 2 cups. To collect a soil sample, dig at least 5 holes (6-8″ deep) staggered throughout the area to be tested. From each hole, take a vertical slice of soil from the side of the hole. Combine all samples and mix thoroughly. Ideally, samples should be dried. To dry soil sample, place on a baking sheet in full sun or in an oven on the lowest setting until dusty.
