Workshop: Secrets of Seed Saving

February 14, 2016 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

Selecting and saving heirlooms and other “open pollinated” seed allows growers, large and small, to preserve, adapt, share and improve the most delicious, diverse and exceptional cultivars, year after year, generation after generation, while simultaneously strengthening local food security and regional food “webs”.

This basic level, hands-on class, by farmer Danny Botkin, will dive into the fertile and inspiring field of “seed saving” by zeroing in on the “easy ones”: the lettuces, the beans, peas, tomatoes and various flower species which can be effectively saved by diligent “gleaning”, cleaning, drying and storing at the proper stage(s). We’ll also explore simple methods to isolate, select and otherwise “guerrilla-gather” seeds of brassicas, other greens, alliums, and even some cucurbits (squashes, etc.), without complicated or expensive intervention. The class will also include information on early-season seed starting, soil/compost making and other “low-heat”, growing ideas, ideal for micro-farms or backyard gardens.

Participants will go home newly stoked about seeds, seed saving and with several, valuable, heirloom samples to grow and save. The workshop includes a farm tour and hot soup and bread. Suggested donation: $25-$45 (No one turned away). RSVP/directions 413-863-8696
