What's in season? What isn't?!

It's peak growing season!

Ah, the season we look forward to all year long. Right now: enjoy corn on the cob, juicy tomatoes, peaches you have to eat over the sink, crisp cool cucumbers, meat for grilling, local milk for smoothies, and so much more.

Find it all -- farmers' markets, farm stands, specific crops -- in CISA's online guide to local food and farms >

CISA in the field: getting the word out about HIP

Do you know about HIP? You should!

HIP, the Healthy Incentives Program, is a state program that provides an instant rebate when shoppers use SNAP/EBT (formerly Food Stamps) to buy produce from participating farms or farmers' markets. That can mean up to an additional $80 per month to spend on food, depending on household size.

HIP helps low-income families stretch their food dollars and access fresh, healthy foods, and creates a meaningful income stream for local farmers. It's a win-win! CISA is a key partner on this program, helping participating farms and market managers administer the program and spreading the word about how customers can access it. We're even running bus ads in English and Spanish to get the word out -- peep the photo to see it caught in the wild (well, you might have to zoom in!).

Want to know more, or to share info about HIP with someone who could use it?

Take a peek behind the scenes at local farms and other local businesses through CISA's weekly Valley Bounty column in the Daily Hampshire Gazette and interviews on The Fabulous 413 on NEPM! Find them all here -- and here are a couple recent highlights:

NEPM: Cook Farm and Flayvors of Cook Farm

Debby and Gordie Cook from Cook Farm and Flayvors of Cook Farm in Hadley talk about how their 115 year old dairy farm has evolved over the years. Did you know:

  • Cook Farm’s dairy cows are kinda famous! Their highly rated Holsteins and Jerseys have won dozens of awards and are highly sought after for breeding.
  • In addition to selling ice cream, they also sell their own raw milk and richly marbled, Waygu beef at their farm store.
  • There are new ice cream flavors all the time. Check out their seasonal flavors like sweet corn, peach, and mojito!

Valley Bounty: Dancing Bear Farm

Figs? In Massachusetts?

Before he started farming them in Leyden, Tom Ashley had never eaten a fig outside of a Fig Newton. Even the idea of fig trees thriving in New England was new to him. Now, he and his wife and farming partner, Trish Crapo, are helping others discover the joys of growing and eating their own fresh local figs.
